Last Thursday, 24th November, United States and Canada celebrated Thanksgiving Day. It is a national holiday that has its origin in 1620 when English colonists arrived to America.
The first winter was hard. Colonists were hungry and cold. Lots of them died. Indian people offered them their help and shown them how to cultivate corn and other food. In autumn, the harvest was very good and colonists had a party to give thanks to Indians. They ate turkey, blueberries, corn and other seasonal foods
The tradition has developed from then, however the sharing of blessings and good wishes keep on. Nowadays, it is celebrated on the fourth Thursday of November. Families get together and have dinner at the elder member of the family´s home (normally grandparents).
They give thanks for the good things they have. They eat roasted turkey, stuffing potatoes, cranberry sauce, pumpkin pie, corn, pumpkins and other vegetables.
At our school we have worked on Thanksgiving Day tradition and we have made some projects in Arts and Crafts lessons.
Here you can see them.
